I was just thinking about my experience at the Wisconsin State Fair – the day I heard God speak. Call me crazy, but I did! For a quick moment, the music and crowd noise were lost to me and I was utterly at peace. I mentioned it to my husband the other day, musing for the hundredth time about what made me so special that He picked me to hear His voice. That’s when I realized, He didn’t choose me.
Let me rephrase: He didn’t choose just me. He decides to love and reach out to every one of us. I was wrong when I said I “accepted” Jesus for the first time that day. My whole life, I’ve acknowledged His existence and, like I said, I’ve felt a tugging on my heart during several different occasions. That’s because He’s always in us, trying to make His presence known. He lives in our souls; we were made in His image and we are a part of Him. This time, He finally got through to me because His voice came from within me, and I heard it because I was listening.
That was the sudden epiphany I had. We don’t have to accept Him. He has already made us His and, regardless of our ignorance and disobedience, He’s our Father and will act like one. A real Father is motivating, encouraging, loving, and present. Because He resides deep inside the depths of our being, He is never out of reach. He is never absent. He can hear every silent plea you make, feel every teardrop rolling down your cheek, see every endearing quality you perceive as a flaw. And you know what? It’s nothing new to Him. It doesn’t bother Him, anger Him, or disappoint Him.
